Domaine des Foudres “Moulin à Vent”, 2019

A classic favorite and a good all-rounder. Moulin-à-Vent is known as "the King of Beaujolais" as it produces a fuller bodied Gamay.

How it's made

One of the northerly Beaujolais Cru's, Moulin-à-Vent takes it's name from the iconic windmill which overlooks the gently sloping south/south east facing vineyards, which lie between Chénas to the north and Fleurie to the south. The appellation is known for it's pink granitic soils (streaked with manganese) and sheltered, slow ripening lower yielding vineyards which produce full bodied Gamay. Sourced by Boutinot winemaker Samantha Bailey, whole bunches were hand-picked at optimum ripeness and underwent semi-carbonic maceration with a ten to twelve day cuvasion to maintain the fruit character. It was then racked into tank for the malolactic fermentation and then we allow the wine to rest during winter, this allows fruit to come to the fore before bottling.

Food Match

Pair with charcuterie or a traditional coq au vin.

Tasting Notes

Very deep garnet red, with a nose that is far more supple than the color would suggest. Bright fruit, quite primary yet ripe with some savory notes of violets. On the palate the wine is quite plump and bubbling with fresh, crunchy berry fruit with some floral undertones.
